Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng visited schools, universities, and sports venues in Jilin Province, northeastern China, from September 13 to 15 to review educational development and preparations for the 2027 FISU Winter Universiade.
In Tumen, a city near China’s border with North Korea, Huai visited two schools to review efforts to improve education in smaller cities and border communities. He examined teaching practices, school development, and initiatives to promote the use of standard spoken and written Chinese.
Huai called for more equitable access to quality education, particularly in border and rural areas. He emphasized the need to improve educational resources in senior secondary schools in smaller cities and counties, adjust school planning in response to changes in the school-age population, and support students’ well-being through mental health services, physical education, the arts, and hands-on learning.
In Changchun, the provincial capital, Huai visited Jilin University, Northeast Normal University, and Changchun University to review their contributions to regional development, scientific research, teacher training, and inclusive education.
He encouraged universities to align their research and academic programs more closely with the economic development needs of northeastern China. He highlighted opportunities to strengthen collaboration with industry, translate research findings into practical applications, and develop expertise in sectors important to the region.
The minister also discussed how artificial intelligence is changing teacher education, calling for updated training programs to prepare teachers for evolving classroom needs. He stressed the importance of expanding access to higher education for students with disabilities and ensuring they receive the support they need.
During his visit to venues for the 2027 FISU Winter Universiade, Huai inspected renovation work, reviewed preparations, and met with staff and volunteers. He called for careful planning and close coordination to ensure the Games are held safely and efficiently while providing a welcoming experience for university athletes from around the world.
The 33rd Winter Universiade is scheduled to take place in Changchun and Jilin City from January 15 to 25, 2027.
