The organizing committee for the 2027 Winter Universiade Winter World University Games, or the 33rd Winter Universiade, in Changchun held its first plenary meeting on Tuesday, marking the start of preparations for the international multi-sport event.
The meeting, chaired by Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng, brought together senior officials from the education and sports sectors, as well as from the host province of Jilin.
The meeting underlined the significance of the Universiade as a global event for university athletes and a platform for youth exchange. It noted that the Changchun Games will provide an opportunity to promote winter sports, support regional development, and showcase the integration of education and sports.
The meeting called for high standards in planning and delivery, guided by the principles of simplicity, safety and excellence. Preparations will include detailed planning for the opening and closing ceremonies, torch relay arrangements, and competition organization. The meeting also highlighted the importance of inviting broad international participation and preparing the Chinese university team to compete at a high level.
In addition to sports competitions, the meeting emphasized the role of cultural and academic activities, including an international university sports conference, to enhance the event’s global engagement.
The meeting stressed the need for comprehensive risk management, including contingency planning and coordination across sectors, to ensure safety in all aspects of the Games. It also called for clear responsibilities, close coordination among participating bodies, and efficient implementation of preparatory tasks.
Officials from relevant national authorities, the organizing committee and the local government attended the meeting.
