The MOE convened a meeting on March 31 to outline priorities for the next phase of the country’s digital education strategy, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across teaching, learning and educational management.

The meeting, held to mark the fourth anniversary of the “Smart Education of China” platform, reviewed progress made during the 2021–2025 period and set out key objectives for the years ahead. It noted that digital technologies have played an increasingly important role in expanding access to education, improving public services and supporting teacher development. It also highlighted the growing impact of AI on education systems, including new demands for talent, innovation and governance.

Looking ahead, the meeting called for more systematic integration of AI across different areas of education. In schools, the focus will be on supporting personalized learning and equipping students with interdisciplinary skills relevant to emerging industries. In the field of lifelong learning, the meeting emphasized expanding digital platforms to better connect education with industry and society, with a view to improving the employability of graduates and supporting continuous skill development.

The meeting also underlined the role of education in supporting scientific research and innovation. It called for stronger links between universities and industry, as well as more effective pathways to translate research into practical applications. In addition, the meeting highlighted priorities in teacher development, international engagement, and the use of data to improve education governance.

A new version of the “Smart Education of China” platform was released at the meeting, featuring modules for lifelong learning, research and innovation, Chinese language education, and education data services.

The meeting stressed the importance of coordinated implementation across different levels of the education system, including the use of pilot programs to test new approaches. It also underscored the need to strengthen data security and personal information protection as AI becomes more widely applied in education.

The meeting was held via video conference, with participation from MOE divisions, provincial education departments, universities and schools across the country.
