The MOE has launched a renewed initiative to strengthen basic education in China’s remote border areas, focusing on expanding school access, upgrading infrastructure, and improving teaching quality in underserved communities.

At a recent national conference, Vice Minister and Chief Inspector Wang Jiayi highlighted the strategic importance of these regions in fostering long-term social and regional development. He stressed the need for well-designed school networks, targeted support for rural “gateway schools,” and innovative reforms in teacher recruitment and training.

The meeting emphasized building an education system tailored to the unique needs of border communities, one that is well-resourced, professionally managed, and capable of delivering high-quality learning outcomes. It also encouraged greater international exchange and cooperation to broaden educational perspectives in these areas.

The meeting brought together officials from the MOE, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, local education departments, and academic experts.
