MOE holds consultation with Hainan Provincial Government

The Ministry of Education (MOE) held a consultation with the Hainan Provincial Government in Haikou on Mar. 18. Participants discussed joint promotion of educational reform to support the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng and Secretary of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee Feng Fei attended and spoke at the meeting, while Hainan Governor Liu Xiaoming served as moderator. Vice Minister of Education Wang Guangyan and Hainan Vice Governor Xie Jing also attended the meeting, where they signed a strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

Minister Huai acknowledged Hainan’s educational achievements in recent years. He said the MOE is ready to expand cooperation with the province through the agreement in order to boost Hainan’s integrated development of education, science, and talent, with the goal of transforming national strategies into regional growth. Huai noted that, in addition to taking advantage of Hainan’s unique revolutionary legacy, it is necessary to enhance the pertinence and effectiveness of moral education, further promote innovation in international education, and standardize the cooperation in jointly run schools with foreign partners. It is also essential to strengthen basic education, vigorously promote the application of high-quality digital educational resources, and improve capacity building in vocational education to cultivate high-quality talent. Huai pointed out that efforts are needed to carry on the integration of science and education and the integration of industry and education., Such efforts are also needed to develop high-level research institutes around key industries such as Hainan’s seed breeding and deep-sea technology, promote technology trade and transfer and deepen reform for high-caliber talent cultivation.

Party Secretary Feng, speaking on behalf of the Hainan Provincial Government, thanked the MOE for its long-term support for the development of education in Hainan. He said that Hainan aims to nurture innovative, patriotic talent with a global perspective. He noted that Hainan will strive to open its education sector further and strengthen communication with the MOE, promote the independent operation of overseas universities in Hainan, and carry out Sino-foreign cooperative educational programs. He also said Hainan will make efforts to develop demonstration zones for the integration of science, education, and technology transfer, improve higher education and compulsory education, and implement the digitalization strategy for education, with a view to transforming Hainan into an education powerhouse.

During his stay in Hainan, Minister Huai also visited the Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City and Nankai Middle School in Sanya.
