Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng conducted a research and inspection tour in Beijing last week. You Jun, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, and Liu Yuhui, Vice Mayor of Beijing, participated in related activities.

Huai said that Beijing, as the national capital, has been working tirelessly to play an exemplary role in promoting education in support of the city’s high-quality development. Following strategic guidance from the Party’s 20th National Congress, the MOE will work with the Beijing government to reinforce moral development in students, ensure public safety on campus, improve cultivation of top innovative talent in basic disciplines, and enable the education sector to open wider.

When visiting the Health Science Center at Peking University (PKU), Huai urged the center to collect and analyze its useful experience and best practices in high-level talent training in basic medicine and clinical medicine, as well as establish more realistic regulations and standards, in order to provide a model for training top medical and clinical professionals. In the process of higher education reform, the center will be required to contribute to the development of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Clinical Medicine, the Huaimi Medical Center, and the National Medical Center for Mental Disorders. It also needs to boost industry–academia collaboration in joint research and talent training, facilitating application and commercialization of research results and leading innovation in medical education in China.

While visiting the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, Huai stressed that the education sector must embrace adaptive reform to achieve innovation-driven development against the backdrop of the accelerating technological and industrial revolution. Efforts should be made to enhance basic research and major technological breakthroughs, improve the quality of talent training to provide human resources needed in key areas, and create a cross-regional community of schools, research institutions and related enterprises through the integration of vocational education and regular education, partnership between industry and academia, and integration of research and education.

Huai expressed hope that the MOE and Beijing government will jointly offer more institutional, policy, resource and infrastructure support for the development of priority industries in Beijing. By doing so, they will build a long-term growth engine in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region, one of the most important political, economic and cultural areas in China.

During his inspection tour, Huai also visited the Beijing Benz Automotive Company, the Beijing Vocational College of Electronic Science, the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, and the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Integrated Circuits.
