Following the United Nations Transforming Education Summit, the UNESCO-led SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee (hereinafter referred to as “Steering Committee”) held a meeting on September 20 to discuss how to facilitate achieving the goals outlined in the Vision Statement of the Secretary-General on transforming education. Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education of China and member of the Steering Committee, attended the meeting virtually and delivered a speech.

Huai said China commended the results of the summit and fully supported the vision statement presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He said the Steering Committee should play a central role in the global cooperation mechanism and should turn the summit vision and initiatives into reality. Huai put forward the following three suggestions: 1) Priority should be put on education. Incentive and accountability mechanisms should be further improved, and the summit vision should be translated into concrete actions in the areas of policy making, budgeting, and educational planning; 2) Global sharing of digital educational resources should be promoted, so as to empower teachers and learners, explore new ways of digital educational governance, and achieve more accessible, inclusive, and high-quality education; 3) Synergy should be promoted to transform education. Governments, schools, teachers, students, families, and all the other stakeholders should be mobilized to facilitate realizing the summit’s goals. More effort should be made to encourage African countries and small island states to participate, especially in programs supporting girls’ and women’s education.

Other attendees included the president of Sierra Leone, the secretary-general of UNESCO, and members of the Steering Committee. Detailed discussions were held on Steering Committee policy making, data monitoring, and mobilizing the global public, youth, teachers, civil society, and others to support the transformation of education around the world.
