MOE releases 2020 Statistical Bulletin on Education Spending

Recently, the Ministry of Education, the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Finance co-released the 2020 Statistical Bulletin on Education Spending. According to the published data, national spending on education totaled RMB 5.3033.87 trillion for the year, marking an increase of 5.69%. Funds channeled into education through government finance in 2020 reached RMB 4.290815 trillion, marking an increase of 7.15% and accounting for 4.22% of national GDP in 2020, a proportion that has remained stable for 9 consecutive years since 2012.

During the 13th Five Year Program period (2016-2020), general public expenditure on education totaled RMB 16.06 trillion, marking an annual growth of 7.02%. In 2020, the expenditure amounted to RMB 3.631047 trillion, marking a 40.4% increase from 2015. According to the Bulletin, in 2020, general public expenditure on education per student in kindergartens increased by 12.3% to RMB 9410.76 over the previous year, marking an increase of 76.48% from 2015. Expenditure on education per student in primary schools increased to RMB 12330.58, marking an increase of 5.08% over 2019 and an 28.13% increase over 2015. For junior high and senior high schools, per student spending increased to RMB 17803.6 and 18671.83, representing an increase of 5.81%/32.64% and 8.45%/49.99% over 2019 and 2015, respectively. For secondary vocational schools, per student spending increased to RMB 17446.93, representing an increase of 5.56% and 31.05% over 2019 and 2015, respectively. For higher education institutions, per student spending increased to RMB 22407.39, marking an increase of 2.89% over 2019 and a 15.33% increase over 2015.
