The Ministry of Education recently published statistics on China’s spending on education for 2019. Details are as follows:
1. Overview
In 2019, the total spending on education in China was RMB 5,017.5 billion, up 8.74% from 2018, of which government spending on education was RMB 4,004.9 billion, up 8.25% from 2018. Government spending on education mainly included spending allocated from budgets for general public finance and budgets for government managed funds, allocations from state-owned and state-controlled enterprises, and educational inputs from school-based enterprises and their social service revenue.
2. Education spending by level of education in 2019
1) Spending on preschool education was RMB 409.9 billion, up 11.63% from 2018;
2) Spending on compulsory education was RMB 2,278 billion, up 9.12% from 2018;
3) Spending on senior high education was RMB 773.0 billion, up 7.53% from 2018, of which spending on secondary vocational education was RMB 261.7 billion, up 6.20% from 2018;
4) Spending on higher education was RMB 1346.4 billion, up 11.99% from 2018, of which spending on higher vocational education was RMB 240.2 billion, up 11.25% from 2018;
5) Other spending on education was RMB 210.2 billion, down 11.77% from 2018.
3. Education spending per student by level of education in 2019
1) Education spending per student in kindergartens was RMB 11,855, up 11.33% from 2018;
2) Education spending per student in primary schools was RMB 13,493, up 5.92% from 2018;
3) Education spending per student in junior high schools was RMB 19,562, up 5.63% from 2018;
4) Education spending per student in senior high schools was RMB 22,115, up 8.10% from 2018;
5) Education spending per student in secondary vocational schools was RMB 21,203, up 7.36% from 2018;
6) Education spending per student in higher education institutions was RMB 38,681, up 6.60% from 2018.
