3rd China-Japan-ROK Education Minister Meeting opens in Beijing

On January 10, the third China-Japan-ROK Education Ministers’ Meeting was held in Beijing. Chinese Minister of Education Chen Baosheng, Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Kōichi Hagiuda, and South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hae attended the meeting and signed a joint communique.

The three ministers agreed to make joint efforts to implement the consensus from the eighth tripartite Summit Meeting between China, Japan and South Korea, enhance student and youth exchanges, promote the upgrading of the CAMPUS Asia Program, and expand cooperation into additional new fields. The three sides would also further improve mutual understanding among the three countries and enlarge the role of education in serving the society, to contribute to the regional and global peace and prosperity. 

Prior to the trilateral meeting, Chen Baosheng met with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts, separately, and exchanged views with them on further promoting practical cooperation in basic education, higher education, vocational education and other areas.

The China-Japan-ROK Education Ministers’ Meeting serves as a major intergovernmental consultation mechanism. Since the inaugural meeting in 2016, the three sides have joined hands to carry out relevant initiatives within the mechanism, playing a significant role in facilitating the educational collaboration and people-to-people exchanges among the three countries. The first and second meetings were held in Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan, respectively, and the fourth meeting is scheduled to be held in South Korea in 2021.
