On January 31, Chengdu was named as one of the ten winners of the 2019 UNESCO Learning City Award on the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) official website.

As an international biennial award, the UNESCO Learning City Award was established in 2015 to recognize cities demonstrating exemplary progress and commitment to promote education and lifelong learning at a local level. To date, a total of 38 cities from around the globe have won the award, including two others in China: Beijing and Hangzhou.

Chengdu was the first city in China to draft and implement local regulations on the promotion of community education. It has also established public education facilities, developed online libraries and service platforms, and created a variety of programs such as “Citizen Lecture Series” and “Study Tours for Citizens”, providing diversified learning opportunities for local people. These efforts and practices have been effective in improving equity in education and have created an environment conducive to inclusiveness, innovation and urban sustainable development.
