National education appropriations exceed 4% of GDP for the sixth consecutive year

The 2017 Statistical Bulletin of Education Appropriations ,co-released recently by China’s Ministry of Education, National Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Finance, reported that national investments in education totaled RMB 4.256201 trillion for the year, 9.45% higher than the RMB 3.888839 trillion of 2016, while funds channeled into education through national finance in 2017 reached RMB 3.420775 trillion, 8.95% above the RMB 3.139625 trillion of 2016, accounting for 4.14% of national GDP in 2017, a proportion that has remained stable for 6 consecutive years since 2012. General public expenditure on education represented 14.71% of the national public budget (RMB 20.333003 trillion in total), 0.04% lower than 14.75% in 2016.

According to the bulletin, in 2017, general public operating expenditure for education per student in primary schools, junior middle schools, senior middle schools, secondary vocational schools, and higher education institutions increased 6.71%, 9.13%, 11.8%, 8.55%, and 8.27%, respectively, while public funding per student in primary schools, junior middle schools, senior middle schools, secondary vocational schools, and higher education institutions increased 4.64%, 6.47%, 6.18%, 2.71%, and 5.44%, respectively.
