Shifting poverty alleviation from funding and donations to building capacity for wealth creation

Since 2015, Xiamen University has been building a poverty alleviation industrial park in Longde County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and developed it into an important platform for speeding up the development of local industries and expanding sources of income for local poor people.

Establishing public service institutions. To support the development of the industrial park, the university has invested over 3 million RMB and taken various measures such as boosting the application of advanced technologies, facilitating the local government’s investment attraction efforts and purchasing the products of the industrial park. It has also set up a number of public service institutions including an e-commerce center, R&D and quality control labs and agri-tech demonstrative bases.

Development enabled by advances in science and technology. Xiamen University undertook research on subjects related to the industrial needs and organized researchers including eminent scholars and graduate students to conduct field studies and assist in solving technological issues for enterprises. It also established several platforms for science and technology in collaboration with other institutes, such as the Xiamen University-Ningxia University-Longde County People’s Government Agricultural Science and Technology R&D Demonstration Base and the Quality and Safety Control Laboratory jointly launched by Xiamen University, Ningxia University and Ningxia Huangtudi Food Co., Ltd.

Matchmaking between producers and consumers. By leveraging its alumni network and creating a direct sales channel on campus, Xiamen University helped to facilitate product marketing and sales for enterprises in Longde County.

Synergies between internal and external resources. As the sound development of the industrial park relies on both its internal progress and enabling external conditions, Xiamen University has promoted the effective connection and concerted advancement of enterprises inside and outside the industrial park, through trade fairs, poverty alleviation workshops and online e-commercial platforms.
