Teacher’s Day in China

2018-08-31 13:58:00

The foundations of the future are built on education, and the strength of those foundations depends on the quality of teaching. China has a long tradition of placing a high value on education, and teaching is a profession that has commanded respect since the time of Confucius. In 1985, the Ninth Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress adopted the State Council’s proposal to establish a “Teacher’s Day” to be celebrated every September 10. On October 31, 1993, the Fourth Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Eighth National People's Congress adopted the Teachers’ Law of People’s Republic of China, which in Article 6, Chapter One states that “Teacher’s Day shall be marked every year on September 10”. Since its establishment, this celebration has played an important role in raising the prestige and social status of teachers, developing a culture of respect, placing value on knowledge and talent, and promoting the development of education.
