MOE press conference presents the implementation of State Council Opinions

On August 31, the Ministry of Education (MOE) held a press conference in Beijing to introduce the implementation of the Opinions by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council on Further Reforming the System of Teacher Training in the New Era (The Opinions) and announce winners of the Award for China Exemplary Educators 2018. Officials attending the event included Wang Dinghua, Director of Department of Teacher Education, Liu Jiantong, Counsel of Department of Teacher Education, Chen Xiyuan, Secretary-general of China Teacher Development Foundation and Ding Tianle, Deputy Director of Department of Education of Zhejiang Province and MOE spokeswoman Xu Mei who acted as moderator.

Wang Dinghua gave a brief introduction to the implementation of The Opinions. Wang said, as the first official document on teacher training issued by the CPC Central Committee since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, this milestone document sets out key methods for promoting teacher training, and reflects the emphasis attached to teacher development by the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core.

The MOE has taken several measures following the direction set by the Opinions, including initiating the Action Plan for Revitalizing Teacher Training 2018-2022, launching activities to promote teachers’ moral education, providing strong support to rural teachers, strengthening capacity building for pre-school teachers, applying artificial intelligence technologies to aid teachers’ work, building teacher training platforms, and reforming the management, performance evaluation and payment of teachers, to ensure more development opportunities for teachers and address their urgent concerns.

Liu Jiantong announced the winners of the Award for China Exemplary Educators 2018.

Chen Xiyuan introduced a series of planned activities to celebrate the upcoming 34th Teachers’ Day in China. Highlights include non-profit campaigns, Development Plan and Awards for Excellent Young Rural Teachers and a Teachers’ Day gala to be aired on the evening of September 10 at CCTV-3.

As a representative from a local government’s education department, Ding Tianle shared his views on the current focuses of teacher training, and Zhejiang Province’s best practices and solutions to address some of the trickiest and most widely debated issues.
