April 24, 2018, Beijing – A meeting was held in Beijing to discuss ways to promote the commercialization of university research and boost the development of innovation clusters. The meeting was held in Zhongguancun, a science and technology park, at the National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone in Beijing. Vice Minister of Education Du Zhanyuan attended and delivered a speech at the meeting.

He said that the MOE had been supporting the Party's strategy to turn Beijing into a world-leading center for technological innovation. Last year, in particular, the MOE launched a cooperative agreement with the Beijing Municipal Government to step up efforts towards this goal, allowing universities to take a greater role in the initiative.

He made a five-point proposal that he believed was necessary to ensure a fuller participation from academia in this effort, namely, universities should do more to harness the synergy between teaching and research; encourage more fundamental research, and build on cross-disciplinary resources; build high-caliber research teams in fields offering a potential competitive advantage; drive collaborative innovation to better serve the nation's key strategies; and further open up to the rest of the world to attract the best researchers.

The Program for Promoting Commercialization of Research Results by Universities Located in Beijing, jointly prepared by the Science and Technology Department under the MOE and the Administration Committee of the park, was released at the meeting. The meeting was attended by representatives from the MOE, the Beijing Municipal Government, a number of Beijing-based universities, Zhongguancun innovative cluster representatives, and businesses located in the park.
