Du Zhanyuan was born in Hunan Province in July 1962. He is an agronomist with a PhD in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from University of Massachusetts.

1978-1982 Undergraduate study (Bachelor of Sciences) in Physiology and Biochemistry, Hunan Agricultural University

1982-1985 Graduate study (Master of Sciences) in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Department of Agriculture, Beijing Agricultural University

1985-1989 Program Officer, China Rural Technology Development Center of the State Science and Technology Commission (SSTC)

1989-1993 PhD study in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Department of Plant & Soil Sciences, University of Massachusetts

1993-1994 Program Officer, Division of Planning, Department of Planning, SSTC

1994-1997 Deputy Director, Division of Planning, Department of Planning, SSTC

1996-1997 Visiting Scholar, School of Law and Fuqua School of Business, Duke University

1997-1998 Director, Division of Planning, Department of Planning, SSTC

1998-2000 Director, Division of Planning and Coordination, then Division of Research Outcome, Department of Development and Planning, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST)
