Chinese scientist wins UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize

The annual UNESCO–Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences held its 2024 award ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Apr. 23. Three scientists are this year’s laureates. Chinese scientist Qiao Jie is among them.

Jointly established by UNESCO and the government of Equatorial Guinea, the prize recognizes outstanding researchers and research institutions that have contributed to improving the quality of human life. Dr. Qiao Jie, Executive Vice-President of Peking University and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, received the prize this year for her excellent research in the areas of reproductive medicine and women’s reproductive health as well as her efforts in sharing scientific data. Prof. Tu Youyou and Prof. Shi Yigong, both renowned Chinese scientists, were winners of the same prize, with Prof. Tu receiving the award in 2019 and Prof. Shi receiving it in 2023.

Besides Dr. Qiao Jie, the other two 2024 laureates are Prof. Mohamed Ali Farag from Egypt and Dr. Triantafyllos Stylianopoulos from Greece, for their research achievements in metabolomics and in cancer therapies, respectively.
